I was initially sent the smaller version by mistake, so this is a review for both sizes. Medium: 15.6-inch laptop barely fits in. It's a tight fit, but considering it's a denim material, it will likely stretch. with time. In terms of space, it's roomy and easily fits a change of clothes or two and some basic toiletries, as well as a notepad, pens and the like. This will make a great weekend bag. Large: A 15.6" laptop will fit in a laptop slot with a handy remaining space, but won't fit when in a protective case on this laptop, which leads me to believe a 17" laptop probably will the same type as 15.6 inch laptop would be medium size. This size will likely fit all your basic toiletries and a few extras, as well as two or three outfits and a makeup bag. In fact, there is no room for water bottles in either pocket unless you conveniently stow them in the main pocket along with your laptop. I don't, but that's not a deal breaker for me. I bought the gray color and it's kind of ash grey, I like it. Storage is compact and efficient, making the bag large but not particularly unwieldy when full. Overall I'm very happy with it and will update my review if anything goes wrong for an inappropriate amount of time.
