Review on 🧡 Sew-link 'Old Style' Ruler-Free Motion Darning Patchwork Presser Foot 1/4 Inch - Perfect for Bernina Old Style Machine Quilting Embroidery by Karla Richter

Near Perfect: Sewing Machine Parts & Accessories

I bought this foot to start hands free on a Bernina 930 after a terrible experience with another ruler foot (https://www.amazon) .com/dp/B085RV97LV/). This review covers both the ruler foot and the included old low-shank Bernina adapter, but it is written from the perspective of an engineer, not a seasoned quilter. Both base and adapter are well polished and electroplated. There is a minimal burr at the mold parting line on both the front and back of the low shank adapter, but it has been rounded off and should therefore not affect use of the adapter. All edges (including the slit on the right side of the foot) are nicely rounded; You'd have a hard time scratching yourself (or pulling a thread in the fabric) with it anywhere but a slot in the included screw. The finish of the adapter is by far the most beautiful of all my old style adapters. The bar diameter is near perfect, ranging from .499 to .501 inches at various angles around the bar. My experience with other low shank adapters on this machine has not been great; I have some. When I fasten the latch to the ankle and foot, the foot on each is about .020" to the left of where it should be. That's acceptable for feet like that on this machine, but not ideal. But this low shank presser foot and adapter combination is almost perfectly centered (within .005 inches of course) both front to back and left to right relative to the needle point. on my car. I will experiment with this adapter and my snap knuckles and feet to see what the centering issue is with these other feet; If they turn out to be other low shank adapters I'll probably buy another pair of Sew-Links to fix this problem. The foot has a .310 inch rise between the bottom of the foot and the bottom of the low shank cap; This should be sufficient for use with 0.25 inch thick rulers. The only things I don't like about this combo relate to using it with the presser foot attached as high as possible on the adapter: 1. The maximum distance between the presser foot and the machine is about 0.135 inches. I suspect this will be sufficient for most of my work, but I would prefer something more. But I doubt it can be fixed without a fully customized low shank adapter which would require new adapter molds. This is probably not financially viable.2. The head of the screw protrudes about .040" below the low shank mount on the bar; this gives only about 0.270 inch of travel from the bottom of the post to the bottom of the bolt head. This seems really minimal for a 0.25 inch thick ruler; I can end up carving a small flat surface on one side of the screw head to make it bigger. Sole; This only leaves about 0.220 inches between the bottom of the adapter and the bottom of the foot. That's clearly not enough for a ruler that's 0.25 inches thick. I ended up using wet/dry sandpaper to remove about 0.070" from the bottom of the adapter to increase that gap to 0.29". If I could take off about 1/3 star for the little things I don't like I would, but still this combo deserves 5 stars instead of 4 so I'll give it a 5.
