It is not sharp and seems to have a higher grate than the regular kitchen grater I usually use. This microplane rips and tears, not scratches. I used lemons for the zest and it completely killed the lemons and ripped the flesh. If it had been sharper it might not have snapped but that was a huge disappointment! I take the kitchen version, at least I know it works well.
