Molasses in January

Full disclosure: I have fibromyalgia that affects my hand movement. I have been working in IT for over 40 years. I'm an old online gamer (we're not many). I played Star Trek on a mainframe in the 70's. I use my computer all day long, from espresso to sleeping. Let's start with the competition. Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball. Now I admit that I never used this device, but I used his grandfather. It's a thumb trackball. I used to have one in the office and one at home. I loved it and used it for seven years until my thumb stopped working. I stopped doing this over 15 years ago. Recently my thumb started hurting for no apparent reason. Then I realized that even though I stopped using it, I still had a trackball thumb and got arthritis in it. It's like quitting smoking and 20 years later getting lung cancer. Use at your own risk. The Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse is what I currently have and am trying to get rid of. It's a fingerball like the Kensington Expert. Let's start with the good. It has a smaller ball which I prefer. Thanks to the ball and the software, your mouse pointer flies across the screen at the speed of light, which I like. I found the buttons in a convenient spot. They require very little hand force to press, which I like and need. Bad is a universal scroll that isn't that universal. For me it works in my Firefox browser and works with Microsoft programs and that's it. If you want to zoom in or out in another program (which is pretty common), you're out of luck. So if you play MMORPGs like WOW, Rift, EVE, SW, GW2, TSW, you're out of luck. If you're playing single player games like CIV 6, HOMM7, MOO, Endless Space, Gal Civ III, Stellaris, you're out of luck. I had to write my own code and map it to keyboard keys so I can scale and not have a programmable keyboard. Sounds like Logitech needs to hire a better assistant. My dogs code pretty well and only charge $50 an hour. This device can be used if you only work in the office. Now let's get down to why we're here, the Kensington Expert Wireless Trackball. I know there have been complaints about the rolling ring but I don't know why. I love it. That's beauty. It's in the right place and requires the right amount of pressure to work. If you don't like that, you have to go out more. I find the ball very big, which makes it a bit uncomfortable for me. It takes some time to get used to. It's also quite difficult. Even when the software is set to maximum speed, it takes some force to move the pointer across the screen. It's like watching molasses in January. I do not need that. After a few hours my arm starts to hurt. I need a trackball that I can use all day. I'm uncomfortable with the top buttons. Grabbing that big ball every time I want to double click is a little awkward. I haven't been able to double click in 25 years. I need the button to do this for me so yeah it's inconvenient. I think four buttons under the ball would be the best design. The good news is that you don't need to be a programmer to use this device. Summary Logitech M570 wireless trackball - use it if you're a masochist Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse - use it if you just do office work or are a programmer Kensington Expert wireless trackball - use it if you have healthy hands and aren't programmer

Pros
  • Customizable 4-button theme, scrolling and cursor speed with KensingtonWorks software
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
