Declination cannot be adjusted, so topographic maps cannot be navigated.

Declination is when you set your compass to magnetic north. You need to be able to set this to get accurate readings when navigating a topographic map. I did my best to try to adjust the internal dial to set the declination, but I couldn't. It has all the markings needed for declination, but it just can't be adjusted. To be fair, it doesn't list the adjustable declination as a function (although it does have all the declination-related markings). All other features of this compass worked fine but I bought it for a purpose and it doesn't suit me. If you want to give this to someone just to have a compass instead of using it to navigate a map, this makes a good gift. If the person who received these expects to navigate topographical maps, they will throw them away or return them.

Pros
  • Good thing
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
