UV Fluorescent Lamp Sterilization

The design concept of this lamp is basically the same as that of a compact fluorescent lamp, but with less mercury, Vycor glass instead of quartz and no phosphor coating that converts UV radiation into visible light. It's a proven design and it works well. Vycor absorbs 185nm radiation that creates toxic ozone from the oxygen in the air, so you don't have to leave the room where the lamp is being used. (I cannot measure the ozone level of this lamp, but if the lamp is left on in an enclosed space for several hours, there will be a slight odor of ozone. I believe this is below the ozone toxicity threshold.) at 253.7 nm, which is lethal to viruses and most bacteria, but can damage the cornea and retina of the human eye. Therefore, the user must protect themselves and anyone nearby from looking at the purple glow. These lamps eventually collect enough tungsten, which is sprayed from the filament onto the walls to block the UV radiation emitted by the lamp. Lifetime is estimated at one year. If the mechanical seal between the Vycor and the tungsten allows air into the lamp, the lamp will go out, which can easily be seen by the user. They are slightly warm but not hot to the touch. I've received several devices with leaking envelopes that didn't light up even on day one.

Pros
  • Absolutely Amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
