No VGA input on the monitor and no HMDI input on my Kaptop. The adapter does not work. It's pointless

I hope it's a great monitor but I can't connect ITI. I have a VGA and no HMDI input on my laptop which is crazy. So I bought a $40 HDMI-to-VGA adapter from Staples to fit a non-VGA monitor in my non-HDMI laptop. It's a rock and a tough place - I don't know why the adapter isn't working, but I'm afraid this monitor might just be a cheap piece of Black Friday wreck. I tried everything - an adapter for a laptop, an adapter for a monitor, but the computer just isn't recognized. I AM DOWN - do I need to buy a new laptop for this monitor to work or can anyone tell me what's going on with this discrepancy. Thanks for your help. Leslie L
