I can use this set of 6 plate coasters both outdoors and indoors due to the nature of the material these rugs are made of. We've used them for the last month of summer and the first month of fall and they've held up well to lots of splashes from kids and guests. We simply wash them in hot water and brush off the soap from food or dried liquid sauces. The holes are fairly small so they protect the table from spills or moisture, but the material keeps it from sliding on both our IKEA dining table and the glass patio table. We didn't put very hot plates on it, but regular bowls and plates of hot food didn't cause any problems.
