Difficult to see in the photo but the problem with these toothbrushes is that they need to be cleaned after each use. Even after occasional soaking in very hot water or hydrogen peroxide for deep cleaning, toothpaste and the like get stuck at the bottom of the bristles and accumulate over time. And because the bristles are so thin and there are so many, they fit tightly together and it's very difficult to remove toothpaste or anything at the bottom. So my son could only use each one for a couple of weeks. Otherwise it is soft and cleans well. But definitely not hygienic given the ease with which dirt accumulates on the floor and how difficult it is to remove. The fact is that these brushes are not designed for long-term use.
