I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up on cheap headphones but when I plug them into my phone I hear this static noise if you don't have a clean fit on the audio connector. As long as I'm not touching my phone or headphones there isn't this noise, but if I wanted to take them out for a run or something it would be annoying. The microphone seems to work decently. I've used it for a few work calls so far and haven't had any complaints about it being difficult to understand, so that's good.
