I thought it would just snap into place but it was so hard to fit each shelf through the slots. If you work on one shelf, another will appear and you will return to the starting point. The white paintwork is also peeling off because it takes an effort to put it back on. It's not too bad, but it looks like it's sitting on a shelf right out of the box. It's also wobbly, so if you're looking for something really permanent, this isn't it. I put this under the sink to organize things I rarely use so they are mostly stationary and out of sight so I keep them but if it wasn't I would return them. It seems like the shelves can hold heavy things, but then again they wobble so you might not want to put them on the top shelf.
