A hole appeared after washing and trying on

This balaclava is made of fleece material. I bought it for my kids to wear on a ski trip. It sits well on the head and appears to be of good thickness. However, we washed it before the trip (to reduce the smell) and after that my son noticed a hole on his head. Since the hole appeared after we washed them once (and didn't actively use them), I'm not sure they will be permanent.
