Works great as a pre-filter on a Fluval.
Supplied with two. I cut it in two. Cut a hole in the middle and attach it to my flute nozzle where the water is sucked in and use it as a pre-filter to limit cleaning the flute from once a month to once every three months. Plenty of surface area for good bacteria to grow.
