This is the first Jerry Spinelli book my son read in third grade and it motivated him to read many of Spinelli's other books (like Maniac Magee and Wringer, both excellent books). This book will make you and your child think deeply about the fact that not every child fits into what most children and adults see as popular or successful (such as being a great athlete or a straight-A student). The "loser" in this book does not have the traditional gifts of athletic ability or high academic achievement. But as you progress through the book, you begin to really appreciate the protagonist's unusualness and attractiveness. Highly recommended.
