Review on πŸ”Œ DEWHEL 8-Pin LED Flasher Assy Relay: Fix Lexus Scion Toyota LED Turn Signal Bulbs by Omar Svagera

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good price, fits and works but not a quality product. Modify your original flasher relay instead!

I bought this flasher relay for my 2008 Toyota Corolla because I had replaced the turn signals with LED bulbs and was having a problem with excessive flashing. I've read about installation issues in other reviews (from other sellers of the same product) but this relay fitted perfectly and I didn't have to cut anything. It was also the cheapest seller at $8.89 when other sellers are selling this part for $10-15. However, this flasher relay is not a quality product. When activated, the turn signal will turn on the bulbs for a full second before flashing at the normal rate; and then while flashing unevenly at normal speed, the turn signals are on 2/3 of the time and off only 1/3 of the time: on-off is on, off is on, off is on, etc. A long first flash is one frequent complaint about this part, although I think I'm a bit more picky than most buyers when it comes to syncopation. Having studied the design, I see no reason why this relay should behave differently in other vehicles, so these shortcomings are by design. I ended up disassembling my Toyota relay to see if I could fix the hyperflashing problem. And so, like this relay, it's not an old fashioned thermal relay but uses solid state electronics to generate a pulse. This means that hyperflashing is an intended and not an unintended consequence of low lamp current draw. I finally found and soldered the current sense shunt in the Toyota flasher relay (looks like a tall bracket next to the internal relays) and replaced it with a 0.1 ohm, 1/2 watt resistor. Now my original Toyota flasher relay is fully LED compatible and flashes normally! When I remove the LED it starts blinking and when I put the original bulbs back it only blinks once as the overcurrent protection trips. So I no longer need this product.
