I like the depth control dial and the ease of use of a single comb. I don't want to keep and switch combs for every length I want to cut. This is the reason I bought this one. It decreases to 0.5 mm and increases by 0.5 mm. But actually, after say 2mm has passed, a 1mm step would be fine. While it would be more difficult with how this dial works, I understand why they didn't. This thing is strong, the charge lasts a long time and I just love everything about it. Except one. And that's a big thing for me. The comb is designed so that you have to hold the device at just the right angle so that it cuts to the exact length the dial is set to. This is not a problem at all if you use a length other than say 2mm. Your hair doesn't grow perfectly evenly, so it may look more natural if your hair isn't all the same length. But when you use this for one of its defining traits, stubble, it's a big problem. You dial in the comb by 0.5mm, but if you don't set it to just the right angle, you'll actually undercut by 1-2mm. So you get some parts of the face close to 0.5mm, but the rest is mostly between 1mm and 2mm. To get them all closer to 0.5mm you have to cut the same areas over and over again, trying to find that elusive angle each time to get the full depth of cut. This replaces a super cheap and old AA battery trimmer with dull blades and a fiddly power switch. This thing has a sliding comb that you manually lengthen to your desired length. There are no markings to indicate length, you're just guessing. It has latches to set the comb at specific positions, but you can easily set it anywhere between those preset points. It can be shorter than 0.5 mm. This old piece of junk works a lot better than this brand new, much more expensive, more sophisticated device, all because of the shape of its crest. The old block will be cut to the length you specified. Of course, if you really hold it at the wrong angle, it will cut a little longer than you set it to. But the ideal point where it intersects or is very, very close to the length you set it to is wide. For this Norelco trimmer, on the other hand, the sweet spot is elusive. If you don't use the stubble feature, this thing is excellent. If you buy it for the bristle feature, be prepared to endure abrasion and the time it takes to go over the same areas over and over again trying to get the setting you entered on the handle.
