Cat Scratch Bootcamp

Got a new sofa after we threw away our old one which was pretty much destroyed by our two cats. They had a great time with him, but it was time to move on. As you moved the new sofa, you could feel her eyes watching our every move. Waiting. Destruction was inevitable. My first line of defense: nail clippers. The task is not easy, but once a week appears at least a little more discreet weapons. Second: a cat scratching post right next to the sofa. They have other posts, but scratching is a social and territorial activity. I don't let them do it on the couch, but I give them a seat next to it so they can get those needs met. Last defense: those plastic barriers. I didn't have high hopes for them, but the idea was to thwart their efforts entirely and steer them in the right direction -- hopefully with the end result that I can break down those barriers once the interest in destroying the sofa completely is shattered . They stick easily and aren't too noticeable, although I look forward to removing them. But they do their job well. Cats have absolutely no interest in putting their paws on this material. A try or two and they gave up - we also quickly redirected them to the scratching post and gave them treats and pets if they used that instead. Plastic. see disappointment and confusion. "DON'T DESTROY? WHAT TO DO NOW?!" My sofa will live on. I can't yet confirm if this bootcamp works (short term plastic, redirect to scratching post, kudos) and if I can remove this product after a while. But it will come in time! Another benefit of this product is that our cats love to lie on their backs and crawl under furniture, causing irreparable damage to the underside of sofas/beds/chairs. It's the wrong side so sometimes I just give up but this product helps a bit with that. I lined the edges of our bed with plastic - cats can still scratch under the sofa, but they usually start clawing and pulling over the edge. This will make them feel the edge and become disinterested and then leave the territory (hoping to get within a foot of the scratching post). If you have a bad case, you could theoretically line the entire bottom of the bed with this material. Good luck to all.
