No blow up necessary like I initially thought. The pad first expands as it is filled with water and then eventually squirts out of the holes. The water doesn't squirt high and inward like the pictures, it was a lower height and squirted outward onto the ground. The kids still had fun, but be careful because the center gets slick and one of our grandsons slipped and bumped his head - still hurt even though we sat the pad on the grass.
