Review on Honeywell HRF AP1 Universal Replacement Pre Filter by Jeffrey Sanders

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Don't buy Honeywell's HRF-AP1, HRF-APP1 or 38002, buy thicker, better, less dusty universal pre-filters.

I do not recommend Honeywell brands HRF-AP1, HRF-APP1 or 38002 because: (1) HRF-AP1, HRF-APP1 or 38002 pre-filters (all made in Mexico) are thinner and thinner much worse, better quality than the original pre-filter that comes with the air purifier or the regular ones I've made in the US, Korea or China before. The 38002 pre-filter has basically the same quality, thickness and porosity as the HRF-AP1 pre-filter, apart from a higher price. I suspect that HRF-AP1 and 38002 are the same product with different packaging and price. (2) The pores or holes are larger, many are 3mm or larger. You can clearly see many large holes by holding the pre-filter up to the light. The pre-filter is also coated with fine coal dust. My hands and my table are covered with coal dust. This means that many particles, including charcoal dust, bypass the pre-filter, causing the HEPA filter to clog faster. Without a pre-filter, a HEPA filter (about $60 or more) only lasts 4-6 months instead of 1-2 years. (3) The HRF-APP1 Pre-Filter (MSRP $17.99) contains added "loose” zeolite. (4) You will get a better deal if you buy pre-filters from universal suppliers. The universal filters I've bought are cheaper, thicker, and contain far less loose black carbon dust than Kaz and Honeywell filters. Also, you usually get 2 filters for the Honeywell 50250 air purifier instead of 1. Search Revain for "B000U204W2" or "B0009GZJT2", get the 16" x 48" for $6.25, or the GE SmartAire 15x48 replacement Carbon pre-filter for $7. Both filters are sold through Industrial Filter Sales etc. and are thicker and denser than HRF-AP1, HRF-APP1 or 38002. (5) According to Kaz's website, Kaz bought the Honeywell Home Environment business, which includes air purifiers, in 2002. . Kaz continues to use the Honeywell trademark in the same way that Lenovo used the IBM trademark. Learning this information takes time. Click Yes below that row if this review was helpful to you.
