AMAZING for the price

I bought this camera about 8 months ago to carry around in my purse. (Fully protected in a hard case.) We also have a 6MP Canon DSLR that we bought in 2003, which was so expensive at the time, and this camera is BETTER and four times cheaper (over $1000 vs. $266). 10x zoom is equivalent to a 280mm zoom lens. Of course, this camera also has 12 MP. I can't believe you can get this kind of MP and zoom in with a pocket camera. Color and clarity are excellent even when used as a camcorder. It picks up different shades of the rainbow better than my naked eye. I recently used Sun (bright) mode when photographing snow, and it's an incredible difference compared to Normal mode, which is just bright white. Our DSLR doesn't have a pre-installed "Sun" or "Bright" mode - something like that would have to be set manually. The camera itself is compact and robust. The viewport is huge and the controls are user-friendly. On/off, photo capture, and zoom are all comfortable for one trigger finger, but not so close that you accidentally trip over one when using the other. I don't like that you have to switch from "Photo Capture" mode to "Image View" mode to delete the photo you just took if you don't like it, but that's not a big issue for me. I only have two complaints. First, you can't zoom when using it as a camcorder. You need to zoom in to the right level before recording, and if what you're recording moves closer or further away from you, you're, well, SOL! I don't think it's a hardware limitation, I think they just didn't include it in the internal software. Second, after only 6 months, the battery doesn't hold a charge very well. And I haven't used it extensively in either photo mode or video mode. The battery is not part of the warranty. But you can get fake batteries (which reviewers say also have about 6 months of recharge time) for $6 to $7 apiece, compared to a $40 "Canon" brand battery.
