Did the job for me: Kickstand

After reading the reviews I was a little unsure if I would like this product. However, it seems like some reviewers have a different situation or usage issues. In particular, the "sticky" silicone gel patch has a plastic covering that needs to be removed before it has any positive effect on holding the device in place. Note that this is NOT "glue", just a slightly sticky substance that increases friction against the surface it is sitting on. Another factor is that depending on the device you intend to use, the clamping system can put undue pressure on the power adapter. I have a Tom Tom GPS that comes with another car. I also wanted to use it in my "other" car. The battery life of the GPS proved insufficient for more than a few hours of use. So I had to buy a 12VDC cigarette lighter to USB power adapter. When using the OEM connector the GPS ended up on the connector on the bottom of the GPS - obviously a bad situation as over time the pressure could damage or break the connection on the circuit board. My first "fix" was to cut through the styrofoam lying around to pry the GPS off the connector, but this resulted in the dash mount ending up in an extreme position and making it difficult to install and remove the GPS. I bought a mini USB rectangular cable (with regular USB on the other end) and that fixed the problem. The mounting tabs on the dashboard put the sat nav at a comfortable viewing angle and the rectangular USB connector doesn't protrude, which relieves the port. After the connection problem was solved, I found the iTrek Universal. The dash mount works like a charm. It's a heavy weight (feels like it's filled with sand) and the sticky pad allows it to stick to my car's dashboard fairly well. My guess is that during sharp and abrupt maneuvers it will most likely slide sideways or fly off the dashboard. but with normal driving it stays where it was put. My only gripe, as noted by some other reviewers, is that the underside has a slightly convex shape, making the device feel less stable than it appears in practice. A flat or concave bottom is likely to be more convenient to "grab" the dashboard. But even with this shortcoming, the mount meets my needs and allows me to quickly take the GPS out of sight, leave the car in a parking lot, etc.

Pros
  • Integrated spring locking mount fits 3, 5, 4, 3, 4, 7 and 5 inch GPS screens and smartphones while doubles as a sunshade to prevent glare
Cons
  • Easily wrinkled
