Initially, buckwheat hull had a very strong odor. After a few days it went away and now it has a faint but pleasant smell. Reminds me of lavender. I have all of the usual allergies and have not experienced an allergic reaction to this pillow. If you have something more intense or specific to buckwheat then I can see you are concerned. Thinking my head is no larger than 14x20, I took the standard Japanese size, but when I received it, I realized that the larger size is probably thicker; I have broad shoulders and this pillow has almost no height so sleeping on my side meant I had to add a second pillow. Rather than recreate the lump I was trying to avoid, I used a rolled up blanket and achieved the perfect height without sacrificing comfort. I love this pillow, maybe you don't. I had no idea why you might not like it, the pillow is great but who knows with you.
