It's just a screw. Or that?

While you could argue it's "just a screw," the science behind these pocket-hole Kreg screws is pretty solid: make sure your project is clamped down for better support. Because the threads are only partially raised, the tip (that you drilled into the pocket) becomes like a passive clamp. The part you didn't drill into, the part you screw into, becomes the jaw. Together they ensure your joint has no play and prevent premature failure caused by insufficient connection or movement in the joints. The large head won't let you snap through the tip, so there's a lot of material on either side of the screw. They're a bit expensive because there are so many in a pack, but they're worth it when you consider how easy they are to make a DIY project and get professional-quality results.
