Review on High-Grade FULI Shiki Futon (Shikibuton) - Traditional Japanese Twin Floor Mattress, Made in Japan by Sarah Garcia

Feels more like a foam mattress than a traditional futon

I've lived in the Far East for many years and slept on beds made to look like smooth wooden tabletops, as well as tatami mats. I recently slept on a pile of blankets laid out on a tatami mat on a steel bed frame. It's a bit sloppy, hard to air out and can bunch up so thought I'd try one of those double futons along with a cover from the same company. They are well made and look beautiful. I was surprised how similar it is to a foam mattress. There is more buoyancy here compared to a stack of two or three blankets, and my hips and shoulders sink into the futon a bit (which doesn't happen with a pile of blankets). As such, it feels very different and also very different than the traditional cotton batting filled futon. However, it's quite comfortable and I slept well on it for a few days, so I'll use it for a while and see how it works. If I decide to switch back to duvets I will definitely keep this as a guest bed.
