Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really good with a few snags.

I've had the Lumix DMC-FS3 for a few weeks now and overall I'm quite happy with it. However, there are definitely some things to consider before buying one for yourself. Here is my list of pros and cons. PROS: - Runs very fast. - Short recovery time after recording. - Excellent macro shots. - The underwater setting is great for removing the blue cast from twilight shots. .CONS: - (Super annoying!) The lens doesn't pop out if you even lightly touch it when turning it on. The lens sticks out about 1-2 cm and then comes back. It's pretty hard to push it out and get it working properly again once that's happened. I grab the lens and pull it out all the way; Pressing the shutter release has always worked for me. I really hope that the lens will not fail in a year! - (Also annoying) Takes great pictures, except in high-contrast situations, then it's a disaster. Photographs of sunny mountains with shadowy foregrounds are just awful. Either the sun portion is completely out of focus and the shadow portion is normal, or the sun object is normal and the shadowed foreground is darkened. Setting "Beach" doesn't change that. Playing with white balance or exposure can make a difference, but don't hold your breath. Batteries drain a little faster for my taste. I only got about 5 hours on a full charge. Be sure to buy 1 or 2 extra batteries, especially if you use it for multi-day trips (buy 3+ then).

Pros
  • High-quality workmanship
Cons
  • Socket required
