Use correct cable for M1 Mac mini or you will get 4K

I bought this refurbished LG 5K monitor as an upgrade for my M1 Mac mini. The monitor was packed like new in the original box - well done. The monitor is shipped mounted on a stand. Two cables are included - USB-C and Thunderbolt. Note that the physical connectors are identical. You can tell the Thunderbolt cable apart because it has a lightning bolt on one side of the connector shell. I wasn't paying attention with my M1 Mac mini and initially connected the monitor with a USB-C cable. This cable only supports resolutions up to 4K. The monitor was very sharp and clear, but I found it a bit too big and of course the 4K and 5K resolution was not available in the display settings. I switched to a Thunderbolt cable and voila! 5K resolution upscales perfectly to 2560 x 1440, Retina upscales 5K resolution. Clear and sharp. The brightness level can be adjusted via software. Please note that there is no power switch on the monitor - apparently everything is controlled via the video cable connector. There are also no other physical switches or controls on the monitor. The speakers are a huge improvement over the Mac mini's not-so-great internal speaker. The volume is controlled by software and the volume control built into my keyboard works great. The camera is HD and works very well for FaceTime, as does the microphone and speakers. It's an expensive monitor, but it's the only "true" 5K monitor out there. there I think. My M1 Mac mini with 16GB RAM/1TB SSD was $1299. This refurbished monitor was $949 for a total of $2248. For comparison, a new 27-inch 16GB/1TB iMac costs $2,399.
