For viewing only, not for astrophotography

I recently bought a Celestron 127eq. So I bought it hoping it will help me track objects in the night sky when doing astronomy/astrophotography. Here's what I found. Pros: Inexpensive โ€“ Definitely inexpensive compared to your $500-$1,000 motorized equatorial mounts. the weight. Battery operation - 9 volt batteries are easy and compact to carry. Pursuit - Good. it haunts. Target Saturn or Jupiter, adjust speed, done. This will keep your crosshairs pointed at them. Cons: Construction - it's plastic so you get what you pay for. It's powered by a 9V battery, so you really can't expect too much. tracking yes. I said it tracks, but if you're under the impression that it will track accurately so you can take long exposures with a connected digital camera, it doesn't. Attempting to precisely match the speed to the Earth's rotation is nearly impossible. Strength - Adding the weight of a camera gear slows the motor and makes it difficult to slow down to the previously set speed. Battery discharge also affects it. Conclusion: great if you just want to watch. It's great for that. But if you plan to do any kind of photography, you'd better save up and get a better quality tripod and mount. If everyone seems to be saying that, it's because they're right. I didn't listen to them and went for cheaper ones. Well, I'm back to say they were right and I was wrong (can't believe I just admitted that publicly). You don't want to get stuck with that. Just get the best mount if accurate tracking isn't too important to you.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Vanish
