I bought this to use for large cups of coffee. My previous glass held no more than 8 ounces of coffee with cream. This is ideal for keeping coffee warm (with the lid closed). I was thinking of getting the pen when I ordered the mug, but I'm glad I didn't. I don't think a pen is needed. I haven't tried cold drinks yet. UPDATE 01/31/19: I had a problem with the lid. For no apparent reason (it hadn't been dropped, otherwise tampered with, or put in the dishwasher) the lid began to look etched and crack. The slider eventually broke and fell apart. Although I was disappointed with the lid, I am very happy with Arctic's customer service. I emailed the company and received a reply the next day apologizing and explaining that a replacement had been sent.
