4 of these fit under our king bed, 3 under a double day bed and 3 under a double bed with center bar (without the bar I could probably crush the 4th underneath). King and queen beds are only 7 inches off the floor and if they were higher I could put another layer of sweaters or blankets in the containers. They have no hard sides and no plastic smell. Edit: The clear plastic is flimsy and breaks easily if caught on something. I don't use them for things I need to access too often, but if you use them frequently you might want something more durable.
