I use a 64GB Transcend SD card as handy external storage for my 2016 15" MacBook Pro. I leave the SD card constantly connected to the hub so I can write or read SD card only once a month. I always leave the hub plugged into one of the USB-C ports, but I don't use the hub to power my MacBook. I recently noticed that the hub felt very hot and wasn't sure what was causing the issue as nothing was connected to the hub other than the SD card that was inserted. I removed the SD card and the hub cooled down after about 10 minutes. Then I used a standard USB reader to plug the SD card into a MacBook and the SD card stayed cool after a few hours.Update: Testing the same SD card with a small Anker 2-in-1 reader and an OWC travel dock No heating from either device.
