Bed side walls, front and foot parts - thick plastic, hollow inside. It adheres well to the metal frame. Installation was easy, but some of the nuts had to be tightened in slightly awkward places. The only thing I don't like is that there is only one rounded metal bar that runs horizontally down the middle of the bed frame. A mattress for toddlers is therefore snug and durable. However, if you buy a cheap mattress or don't have extra padding, you might feel the metal bar right on your back unless your little one is feather light. I lay on it with my toddler and the bed held up pretty well and I weigh about 200 although I didn't stay on it for too long. I hope this is sound advice if you think about it.
