This iron heats and heats close to the roots/edges. Grab one of those heat-protective gloves and some heat-protective hair product. It's not too easy and not too difficult. It heats up very, very quickly and the controls, on/off and temperature settings are out of the way - I also like how long these plates are. This allows me to use the flat iron all over my head, straightening and creating spiral curls rather than just "pulling out the roots and/or smoothing the edges". I really hope this iron lasts a long time. One last thing, there is no velcro to attach the cord and the loop for hanging is very small.
