Review on Elegant Home Fashions ELG 529 Whitney by Daniel Russell

Beware of lemons.

I needed a small closet in my home office and seeing this and the mostly good reviews I thought it would be a great addition. It really suits my space but I really wish I knew exactly how cheap this item was before I bought it. I'll say it's quite a nice touch when you put it together and it's not difficult in theory - BUT the cabinet I received was so poorly constructed that when it was manufactured it didn't get all the holes drilled correctly huh means the supplied pins and screws were there that you were supposed to use for assembly, didn't fit properly when reassembling. This caused major problems and headaches as the parts had to be flush in order to assemble the parts properly, which was originally impossible due to some screws just not going all the way. There was also the problem that some of the pre-drilled pin holes were either too wide or misaligned so the pins just slipped out, causing parts you thought were assembled to suddenly fall apart during build. This resulted in some steps having to be repeated multiple times! Needless to say, this was an extremely painstaking undertaking which resulted in the construction taking much longer and requiring a lot more drilling, chiseling and scribbling than it should have been. necessary. I ended up more or less assembling the animal, although I had to make new holes or re-drill existing holes to get the job done; and in a moment of utter frustration I cracked a panel on the back a bit - although luckily it's not noticeable - so be careful if you have to over-drill anything. That said, I have to admit - maybe I just got a particularly sour lemon - and at first I thought about sending it back for a different one, maybe not defective but the hassle of returning an item so large I'm full unpacked and plugged in, so many parts just weren't worth it. Especially when I knew that with some tenacity, determination and power tools I would be a winner - and the finished product looks really good. If you decide to do this, know that it really isn't worth more than the $77 they're asking at the time of this review. Unfortunately I bought this item a few months ago when the price today was $122 instead of $77 and if the price goes back up and you're thinking about buying this I think you'll find a much better made closet at discount stores in could find near you. range (TJMaxx, Ross, etc) as the materials and production of this cabinet certainly doesn't justify a price tag of more than about $75 in my opinion, lemon or no lemon! This case isn't wood (the back panel is actually nothing more than a fairly thick piece of cardboard that you attach at the end of assembly!), and for all its aesthetic appeal, it doesn't look or feel particularly premium once assembled. Mine also has the uneven handles mentioned by another reviewer and they also wobble when touched and the doors never want to stay fully closed. I resorted to wrapping elastic bands around them to secure them in place. Conclusion: If you like it, take it. But be aware that you may also need a drill, or know someone who can. Also note that it is poorly made or made of good materials that will not last long. And I highly recommend purchasing it. Functionally it does the job I need right now, but if I had known what I know now I wouldn't have bought it - certainly not for $122. And oddly enough, shortly after I received this, I bought a similar item for another room in my house at a local hardware store that was actually cheaper than the $122 I paid for it - it's wood. , and there are even handles that snap into place!
