As painful as it sounds, it's best to sift the ashes before attempting to fill the small silver tube at the top. I used a cheap kitchen strainer to sift them into a small bowl and then very carefully filled it, using the light on my phone to check how much was in there. Put it here for sizing purposes. Feels very expensive. I would buy again and again.
