The "hinge" is simply a thinner piece of plastic that is stressed with each activation. It will inevitably fail over time. This thinner part cannot touch the rim of the carafe, leaving a gap for liquid to seep through. The lid is difficult to fit as the oval lid must be perfectly aligned with the oval top of the carafe before the lid can be snapped into place. There are no markings on any of the parts to guide this alignment, so waste your time trial and error.

The first set I ordered was torn due to inadequate packaging (it came in a flexible mailer, obviously overcurved). I ordered another one which arrived today in good condition (it was boxed with some other items). Suitable for plastic carafe. The "hinge" is just a thinner piece of plastic material that's a bit stiff and only stays fully open when you connect the small bumps together. I find it a little annoying, but only a little, and it can loosen up with use. As I said, functional.
