Lots of great actors in the first roles!

Wow. It was damn interesting. Background: Mary Poppins, daughter of Archie Bunker, marries Father Merrin (the exorcist) and travels from Boston to do persistent Calvanist missionary propaganda in Hawaii in 1819. It proves a difficult journey, and once there, even more difficult, to convince the fabulously unrepentant Malama Ali'i Nui and her people to abandon centuries-old cultural practices including: *aloha*, daily joy, gratitude, and peace. , and free love/sex (with some royal incest between

Real Hackwork! - Men's

I ONLY give one star because this version is NOT the original. This is a beautiful movie hacked to death. The original was released by United Artists, but when MGM bought UA they apparently decided to cut a few corners, Hawaii being one of them. I have the original version on VHS that I recorded over cable many years ago. Originally 188 minutes. long. This version only has 161 minutes, of which 27 minutes were cut! Of course, that's more than enough to affect the plot. If I had known that, I…

Great cinematography but woefully incomplete

Based on Michener's book but with only one chapter. The title should have something more to do with the story of Hale and his psychotic relationship with another culture. Calvinists should not be allowed to associate with beautiful places like Hawaii and gullible people. It's a sad story overall, and this film only touches on the general shame of what happened in Hawaii in the 19th century. The sequel "Hawaiians" touches on another small part of the book, but still blurs the whole story with…

It teaches many good things about clothing

This film teaches how the fantasies of cultures and religions distort many people's views. The characterizations are absurd, the plot is unrealistic, and nudity is used for added appeal. The fantasy world propagated in such films is responsible for an unrealistic world view and poisons the realistic understanding of the world in which we live. Julie Andrews is beautiful and has a wonderful voice. Max von Siedow is a good actor, as is Richard Harris. The characters they are trying to portray are

HAWAII I miss you so much

Sitting at home is terrible. We had to cancel our vacation to Kauai where I was planning to go scuba diving on the secret island of Niihau. Many years ago it took me three years to read the first 100 pages of James A. Michner's Hawaiian Islands (real island building), so I decided to see the film. JULIE ANDREW on Mary Poppins/The Sound of Music I believe. A very strange, dated film that only gives a small glimpse of what really happened in Hawaii. Another great example of land grabbing by…

Watch again (or for the first time)

One of my favorite movies of the last 4 decades! I love Michener's historical novels and Hawaii is a good adaptation of his work. All actors are great. This is Julie Andrews when she was young and gorgeous, alongside the dashing Richard Harris as a rebellious whaler pining for the woman he lost. Swede Max von Sydow is the perfect embodiment of a well-meaning but often argumentative religious fanatic. "Hawaii" was filmed on two Hawaiian islands, so picturesque splendor fills your senses. I'm not
