The description says it is a dry erase board. I used a proprietary marker (Expo) and etched the surface. Now I use a fat pencil on it and it's ok. I've seen reviews of the screws loosening so I'll put Loctite on them. For the price I'm satisfied. I bought it to keep the scenes and sound clear when filming, it will definitely help with that.

When we first used it on a shoot one of the two tiny screws holding the flap loosened and was lost rendering the flap unusable so we had to tape it to keep it from dangling . We used a brand new whiteboard marker to write on the board and when we tried to rub it off we had to rub very hard to remove it and the white of the board was permanently soiled. This is a decent entry-level tablet. This money gets the job done. I won't give that 5 stars because the dry erase markers bought specifically for the slate don't rub off the slate and the words aren't engraved on the plastic as the description says. I will only use this for small production shots. The clapperboard sound is audible in the sound files recorded during the shoot, but I would like the marker to be easily removed. Agree, the price is very low! For that alone I was a skeptic. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality when it arrived. It was very well packed in foam and plastic (see photo).
