I usually use a two layer cowhide gun belt (expensive but durable). However, I'm currently losing quite a bit of weight, so I bought this to 'wait' until I can determine my new 'final' belt size. The belt itself is quite thin, but this is an advantage if you constantly have to drill new holes. The clasp seems strong enough.
