Depending on the distance between the button and the buttonhole, they can work. Difficult to fit an end into the buttonhole.

I bought these because my pregnant belly was bulging and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on maternity pants/shorts, they were perfect for what I needed until I needed maternity pants! They're not the prettiest or the most discreet, but with a flowy shirt, they'll get the job done!

So I didn't use mine on pants, I used mine on baby bibs. On the neck they worked great, on one side place the button and on the other stretch, of course you have to remove the button from the extension, but I'm very happy with the results.

If you need it, I recommend NOT to buy rubber bands. It stretches to the point where there is no reason to have 3 buttonholes, you have to use the narrowest hole and then it stretches to the point where the pant is too loose.
