I will say that in my opinion it was necessary to drill a hole, a big THANK YOU to everyone who has posted this in the reviews! installed correctly after remodeling, works exactly as expected, super satisfied. That being said I installed it completely and put a screw through the connector to secure it to the heater pipes and the screw didn't sit anywhere. For example, I couldn't get it "in the hole" that I knew it was supposed to be there. Removed the newly installed core to see that the bolt hole was not drilled. Ironically, this article's photo shows the important screw hole between the inlet and outlet in the upper left corner. "Irony" because the item arrived WITHOUT a fully drilled screw hole.
