was taken in addition to the 18-55 kit, but the 50mm kit quickly became the primary one; the whale is now sitting unused in the bag it came in. The quality of photographs taken with a 50mm lens is an order of magnitude higher; therefore, I would rather scale a wall in order to ensure that everything is captured within the frame than secure a whale. Those who have stated that the focus is not tenacious or that there is little sharpness at 1.8 are encouraged to become proficient in the aperture priority mode and to experiment with different levels of depth of field. Because this lens is not the appropriate tool for the job, you should avoid shooting on a machine with it. It's not that the lens isn't sharp after you stop down to 1.8; it's simply that the depth of focus is so shallow here that the sharp portion of the image is barely distinguishable against the rest of the frame. There was a choice between this and 35mm, but (to our good fortune), 35mm was sold out. I took 50mm - and I do not regret it. Don't think twice about it, just do it!
