I have two such aquariums, one at home and one at work. I find them very easy to care for. Instead of replacing the filter cartridge, I simply rinse the sponge in "waste" water and swap out the activated carbon pieces from time to time. I really like ceramic media as they are a great home for "good" bacteria. My aquariums ran fast and I had no problems with ammonia. Since I have cockatiels and they don't like excessive turbulence, I added a valve to the air hose to control the amount of airflow. I usually turn it off completely during the day to allow my fish to swim without fighting the current and then leave it on all night to allow the filter to do its job. Both of my fish are doing well with this setup. Just do your homework and don't overload this aquarium. I wouldn't use it for goldfish (too much waste) or more than a few small fish. A beta works fine.
