I never write reviews on Amazon but I just have to scold and warn you not to waste your money on this product! I've literally bought it 3 times and none of them are worth the money. The first time the heater worked for about a week, then after a few minutes it stopped working. The second worked for about two weeks, after which it stopped working altogether. The third doesn't even come on. I really did everything that the instructions said. I leave it in the water for 20-50 minutes before plugging it in. And I leave it in the water for 20-50 minutes after unplugging it to clean the tank. I am literally so disappointed in Tetra products. Don't sell what doesn't work. Don't sell animal products unless you care enough about animals to make implements. I can't find another turtle heater from any other company so I kept buying this one thinking I was out of luck. I don't know what I'm doing now, but I'm not spending any more money on the tetra.
