Review on Cowryman Handheld Router Plane For Precise And Efficient Woodworking - R022 Plane by Steven Lewis

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Definitely Light Duty

Summary: There are too many small things wrong with this tool for me to be glad about purchasing it at this price point. Most of it is fixable but just look to the premium tool makers or vintage market on this one. Here are the highlights:1. The nobs are too small. You could turn new ones.2. The fence is difficult to lock square onto the frame and it's clunky to adjust. It comes with a screw driver but be prepared to take out your packet square and register it against the sole while tightening down the screws.3. The blade doesn't remain at the set depth. This is the real nail in the coffin for me. The whole point of a plane like this is to allow cuts to be made at a fixed, consistent depth. This tool doesn't accomplish that. If you only take very light cuts and you're going along the grain you'll be alright but if you start working cross grain or end grain you're going to have a bad time.I give this product two stars for good materials and a good cutting blade. It's possible I just worked this thing a little too hard and knocked something off kilter. I wanted to like this router plane but I'm going to be coughing up the dough for a premium tool.Overall this tool will be consigned to taking heavy passes (ironically) after the bulk of case is removed with a chisel but before I finish the cut with something more reliable. It's a niche job but since I already have this I'd like to make use of it.

Pros
  • I loved the simplicity of the design.
Cons
  • The plane's handle can become slippery and difficult to grip
