Review on Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens - Compatible with Canon DSLR Cameras (Lens Only) by Hideo Ebara ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not a bad buy, well worth the money.

Analogues used: Canon 18-135 STM, 24-105 f4 L. This is with the same FR. I compared it with an alternative staffer CANON 24-105 f4 L in sunny weather, but with clouds, then in drizzling rain, and, finally, in an apartment with and without flash at aperture 5.6, as the most optimal for both lenses. I made the following conclusions: color 24-105 is a little warmer, livelier and more interesting to me personally. This one seemed a little more contrasting, apparently due to less pronounced warmth. The sharpness is the same in the center of the frame. Both lenses were aligned in the camera. I took it as a second staffer in addition to 24-105 f4 L for a wide angle and vaunted sharpness, picture and aperture. It turned out as a result only because of the wide angle and aperture ratio of one stop. This is all in comparison with the 24-105 f4 L, whose focal lengths suit me more. Of course, when compared with the EF-S 18-135 STM that I had or the whale 18-55, the difference is obvious. And so it’s an excellent staff member for crop if these particular FRs suit you. But the price is clearly too high, apparently due to the lack of an adequate alternative, after all, the best EF-S lens. Selling almost new, even in excellent condition, without losing 1/3 of the price will not work. Only overpriced and lowered the rating. HURRAH. Sold with a loss of only 15% of the purchase price. I will never buy again. It does not give super quality, but it costs like gold-plated.

Pros
  • Constant f2.8. And sometimes working, that is, the sharpness is almost indistinguishable from f4, sometimes, of course, noticeably worse. Autofocus, even in very poor lighting conditions, is quite good, although refocusing with every half-press of the button, even if there was no change in focusing distance. The picture is more interesting compared to the Canon ef-s 18-135 STM (and probably other whale ones too). Well, good sharpness and the presence of a stabilizer. and all in all.
Cons
  • Overpriced. Distortion at 17mm, although for the landscape this can be turned into a plus. Lack of dust and moisture protection, which for such a price must be. Compared to EF lenses (24-105 f4 L, EF 40 STM) there is a noticeable reduction in detail towards the edges of the frame. And personally, it's not enough for me on the long end.
