Harder for me to hear, easier to hear when I'm calling

I got this because their techs said it would fix the problem, the people on the other end of the line said they could hear me. I have an AT&T 974 with a headphone jack. Have a Plantronics HW540 headset plus a Plantronics quick connect phone to headset adapter cable. Also, it takes up extra desk space and I have to reach for the phone to answer it, which is cumbersome. The positive moment: My conversation partners hear me better.
