Review on TEXALAN 4 Inch Drill Compound Machine by Tim Blandin

I was trying to please - Vice

I wanted a short XY vise to fit my 10" drill press and Texalan seemed to fit the bill and was reasonably priced. When I opened the box, I suspected it was a bug. It was poorly packaged and the knobs were still loose even with the set screw fully tightened. In operation, the movement was very rough and the resistance changed as the slide was moved from one end to the other. I've tried cleaning it and sanding the surfaces, but it's so unfinished that it needs a serious overhaul. In addition, it relies on a flimsy system of 3 set screws to put pressure on the slide, with the middle screw having a small ball bearing at the end to help the movement. If the pressure is too strong or uneven, then it will be difficult to move, loosen screws, and the vise will have too much play. I also suspect that with use, the screws will loosen on their own. I noted in the title that I was trying to get it to work but realized it was a losing battle and sent it back.
