Black Dust - Fish & Aquatic Pets

I received a box of black pebbles and dust. It's too bad for a decent filter. Also, the water in my tank turned black no matter how many times I rinsed and soaked it. This is the WORST charcoal I've used in all my years of keeping fish, but that's what I get for trying to save a few bucks by buying an API product. Now I have black fingers, a black sink, a black tub, black buckets, black water from the tank, and a filter with a black rock in it. I threw the whole box of this nonsense in the…

IDEAL FOR GARDENING! ALSO CHEAP!

Used as a filter layer over rocks to create succulent terrariums. It currently costs just over $6 a half gallon, free shipping as an add-on (I order six boxes), making it the best product out there. It has some dust in it, but the size of the pieces is perfect for my purposes. Dust is not harmful to terrariums, but rinse thoroughly before using in aquarium filters as directed on the packaging. I tried another cheaper brand but the grainy chunks were too big for me.

Great for removing bad smells

I put about a tablespoon of these charcoals in small cloth bags in the freezer and fridge because there was an odor that couldn't be washed off. Baking soda, dish soap, etc. couldn't get rid of it. This charcoal eliminates odors. A few downsides: it's dusty and rinsing is a hassle unless you have a fine strainer because the particles are so small. Also, dust gets through the cloth bags even after rinsing, but this is solved by putting a plastic cover on top. It was a learning experience, but I…

Ideal for removing unwanted odors from the fridge.

Unfortunately we had an incident where shrimp destroyed our fridge with a terrible smell. The box it came in was leaking and juices were spilling all over the place. Anyone who has ever experienced this knows that it is the worst smell in the world and is difficult to get out of your nose and fridge. I completely emptied the fridge and used 409 everywhere. I tried baking soda. I tried to pray. I ended up buying it, pouring it into a couple of Rubbermaid shallow bowls and keeping it in the…

Nobody mentioned what a mess this stuff makes!

What an ugly mess! My countertops and sink are stained ugly gray everywhere now (it was eggshells) from pouring this loose charcoal into my pantyhose and rinsing them until the water runs clear. Ruined a mug I was using. I had no idea it was going to get so dirty and make such a mess. I hope this review saves someone from the same fate. Still gets 4 stars because the water in my tank is cleaner and brighter after two days in my swamp. I just wish I knew that I would use a GLASS bowl and not a…

  • Slim design

  • Not as thick as other picks

Constant dust but does the job

Lots and lots of flushes and still black drain. Dust leaves noticeable stains on my rocks and plants in my tank. However, it seems to keep the tea clay off my driftwood (the reason I bought it). Also my fridge smelled better which is a plus. However, I probably won't buy them again as the grains are much smaller than I expected. You need a bag made of ultra-fine mesh. After finishing this box and the tannins coloring my water too much again I might try Purigen or maybe the larger charcoal…
