I use it to control the speed of a small built-in 12VDC (2.5A max current) bilge fan motor. The off position makes a nice audible "click" and saves me from adding another switch. I didn't try to work around this to see if there was a performance reduction on the "max width" setting. This would be disappointing so the rating may need to be adjusted if this happens. They did a great job of making my 24V 3D printer's fans quieter, but the cable connections weren't very secure and the cables were easy to pull out (hence the 3 stars). I removed the terminals and soldered the wires into the through holes. At full throttle the fans were quieter, I don't know if it was due to parasitic losses slowing down the fans or the controller removing noise from the PS.
