Grinder was damaged even though the factory box was perfectly fine. Due to an unforeseen surgery I was not able to unbox and inspect for almost 3 months. During that time it stayed in the original Ebay box that it was shipped in. Wheel was broken, shroud and shaft were bent. I contacted Woodstock customer support and the "lead" technician Andrew strongly advised me not even to turn the grinder on due to safety concerns. After sending them pictures of every side of the box, and all the damage to

Pros
  • Silent and work's perfect. Sharpens dill bits very well.
Cons
  • The variable-speed feature is not as smooth as it should be, and there are some noticeable jumps between the different speeds

You get what you pay for

It's just OK. Now be forewarned, in my shop I have four Baldor 8" grinders/buffers, a Makita wet grinder, an old Craftsman bench grinder, and a 10" 5hp three phase pedestial grinder in the barn. Each is set up for a specific purpose. I'm very fussy about tool work and I bought the Shopfox to replace the old (45 years) Craftsman grinder. I thought I'd put a CBN wheel and cup on the Shop Fox for light sharpening at low speeds. I should have bought the Jet variable speed. The shop fox…

Pros
  • 3/4 HP variable-speed induction motor
Cons
  • The grinding wheels on this grinder tend to vibrate excessively, making the finished product less smooth

Not a familiar name but best grinder ever bought

I’ve gone through a lot of grinders as it is my favorite tool in the shop, this tool not only is a tool but it makes tools. This is Shop Fox grinder Hass to be the best one I’ve ever used for the value that it cost. It has an LED light that doesn’t blow out with vibration like every other grinders . the lights construction is also well made it in that it stays where you put the light again from other models the vibration makes the light bow down but not with this one. Right out of the box I…

Pros
  • 5/8" grinding wheel Bore
Cons
  • The locking mechanism on the grinding wheels is quite flimsy and tends to loosen while in use

Just what I needed!

Does exactly what I wanted it to do: high torque, low speed sanding and polishing with a 24" belt sander attachment. I took me tries to find one with enough torque that didn't cost an arm and leg.

Pros
  • Power & Hand Tools
Cons
  • The platform for supporting the workpiece is poorly designed and not very sturdy

I'm sold on shop fox brand

I'm impressed. I've heard good things about the shop fox brand so I thought I would give it a try. Runs smoothly with a little vibration at high speed. Could use a break, takes over 3 minutes to come to a stop. At least you know it has good bearings. I put it all together with no parts left over. Started it up and after 15 seconds a small nut went flying by me. Then a bolt. Shut it down and there was some sparks. The small bolt holding the spark shield came loose. This was already bolted…

Pros
  • Motor speed: 2000 - 3400 RPM
Cons
  • The power cord on this grinder is quite short, making it difficult to position it in the right spot

It was a great choice for me

Really a nice grinder considering the price and you do have to consider the price! It has a bit of vibration, not a lot. It was caused by the stamped steel washers used to hold the wheels. I trued them on a lathe and it runs great. It has great power, more than I expected and the variable speed is a good feature.

Pros
  • Dual adjustable aluminum work rests
Cons
  • The wheels on this grinder are difficult to adjust and tend to become misaligned over time

Good Bench Grinder - my new review

It performs well. The grinding wheels are cheap. My unit was also missing hardware. I still like the product though. I wish it was USA made ,but thats hard to find in any product these days

Pros
  • Grinders
Cons
  • The grinding wheels on this grinder tend to become clogged quickly, making it difficult to produce a smooth finish

Possible QC problem.

This product seems like it will be a good tool but was shipped with damaged grinding wheels. I would like for the manufacturer to send me new grinding wheels that are not damaged. If I were to dress the wheels that came on grinder they would be 50% worn out.

Pros
  • Tools & Home Improvement
Cons
  • The Shop Fox W1840 is quite bulky and takes up a lot of space in the workshop

Good grinder - except one thing

I purchased this grinder to use with a Oneway Wolverine grinding jig system. Unfortunately, the motor base of this grinder is unusually wide, which prevents the jig bases from being placed properly. I simply am unable to use the grinder for the reason I bought it.Nice grinder. It runs smooth and the light is actually usefully bright. The lamp's gooseneck also works well.If you have no plans to use a Oneway or similar grinding jig, then this should be a good grinder for you

Pros
  • The grinder runs smooth and quiet. The light runs works great and is a huge benefit!
Cons
  • The price of the Shop Fox W1840 is quite high compared to other grinders on the market

no quality control, poor manufacturing process

This was purchased for me as a gift by my lovely girlfriend. As other reviews mentioned the wheels were extremely out of balance but not just the wheels there were a lot of things that were bent or warped and knowing what I know now as I struggle to straighten various pieces of this machine I can see that almost nothing that came with it that needs to be straight is straight at all. The tool rest were extremely bellied I had a flatten those. Luckily they're cast of aluminum so it was easy to…

Pros
  • Dual 8" Aluminum-Oxide grinding wheels
Cons
  • The dust cover on this grinder is poorly designed and tends to pop off during use

Not the best best in my review

Just the same as all the other offshore made stuff. 3/4 HP, 5 amps? That is the input power! The output is what counts. These advertised 120vac 3/4 HP grinders are actually 1/2 HP output due to the actual efficiency of a/c motors, which at best are 65% efficient! Some of the manufacturers out there will honestly tell you that their 5-amp grinders are 1/2 HP. Those are the brands to buy from, et al., Metabo, Craftsman, Jet, and Baldor, label their 5 amp grinders as 1/2 HP. I use an old 1965…

Pros
  • Great grinderGood quality
Cons
  • The motor on this grinder is quite noisy and can be distracting while in use

Used is very used best in my review

Shaft was bent the left stone wobbled 1/2 inch. Shield was missing and the side covers were completely warped! If your going to buy this buy it NEW

Pros
  • Bench Grinders
Cons
  • It takes a long time for the motor on this grinder to reach full speed, which can be frustrating

Buy dressing stones with this.

When I first got it, the wheels were way out of balance. I should have stopped, balanced and dressed them. Instead I persisted with my task. At a certain point the speed control quit. the engine was burning hot. I stopped and ordered some dressers. They worked like a charm. The machine stopped vibrating and now it works smoothly. The speed control works again and the engine doesn't get too hot.The instructions say (in somewhat broken english) that one should return the machine if there was an…

Pros
  • Works great
Cons
  • The instruction manual that comes with this grinder is poorly written and difficult to follow
